Yin Becomes Yang
Yang Becomes Yin
In a swirl of motion there’s always that stillness within
Waiting to become.
Poised for Action
But not yet Acting.
Color waiting to be born.
This is what it looks like when
Yin Becomes Yang.

My Thoughts on the Work
I was looking for motion amid stillness when I created Yin Becomes Yang. What does it look like in the between space, before there is motion but when energy isn’t actually still, either. I wanted to explore that balancing point in a dynamic Universe, like the one in which I live.
As much as I imagine the classic stillness of meditation, I’ve never experienced it. Sure, I’ve spent many hours in meditation…but even in that stillness there’s motion. Life is never quite as peaceful as the pictures depict. Cars zoom by outside. Wind moves the leaves. My own heart beats on. Always, there’s something in motion.
The point where yin becomes yang within the motion is the point that interested me. This piece looks at the fluidity of motion needed to come to that still point. I used a dye-later technique to create this work, focusing first on the underpinnings of motion then layering dyes on top of that to create the foundation of the work. I painted the morphing Yin/Yang symbol last so I could best allow the motion of the dyes to inform my brush strokes.
